What to Expect with Botox®

On the day of your initial appointment, you will consult with Dr. Ratliff and his staff about your expectations and your questions about the procedure will be addressed fully.

During the initial consultation, we will determine whether you are a good candidate for treatment with Botox®, or if another procedure may be more appropriate to achieve the results you desire.

If it is determined Botox® is appropriate for you, we do an exam to determine your ability to move certain muscles that are causing wrinkles and frown lines. During the procecure, you are seated in a reclining chair, much like a dentist’s chair. There is no anesthesia required, but we may numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream.

Several tiny injections are given directly into the muscles that are causing the wrinkles and frown lines. There is minimal discomfort when the injection is given. A cold pack may be placed on the injection sites following the injections. The procedure usually takes about 10 minutes.

There is no recovery time. The most common side effects from Botox® include temporary eyelid droop and nausea. There may also be inflammation, tenderness, and slight swelling and redness associated with the injection sites. Certain neuromuscular disorders may increase the likelihood of serious side effects. Talk with your doctor about possible side effects before scheduling the procedure.

You should begin noticing a difference in your appearance within a matter of days, with marked improvement after several days. These results may last up to four months. Results may vary, based on a number of factors.
