Laser hair removal is among the top five cosmetic procedures performed in the United States. And with advances in technology, this procedure is now available for every skin tone and type and has no downtime.

 

Hair removal by laser has been around since the 1980s, but the latest laser technology, including the eLight laser system by Syneron that Skin Deep Medical Spa utilizes, offers great results in a short time. Laser hair removal works by sending a beam of laser energy into the hair follicle, which is then heated and destroyed during the process. Following treatment, there is a permanent reduction of 80-90 percent of unwanted hair. The hair that does come back is much finer, lighter in color, and much thinner than the original hair.

 

Traditional laser hair removal, using only optical lasers, had limitations, especially with darker skin tones, which could be damaged and lightened during the procedures. The eLight system in use at Skin Deep Medical Spa utilizes the patented eLos technology to combine optical (laser) energy with radio frequency. During the hair removal process with eLight, the target area is preheated using optical energy and then a radio frequency current is delivered to the hair follicle. The follicle is disabled during the process, but surrounding skin is unaffected.

 

 

During the treatment, a gel is applied to the area that is to be treated. This gel helps the transducer glide easily across your skin. The head of the transducer is about an inch from top to bottom and ½ inch wide. When the laser is activated, you will feel a slight twinge that patients have compared to being snapped with a rubber band. If you are having areas near your eyes treated, special care is taken to protect these sensitive areas. 

The treatment time varies, depending on what part of the body is being treated. This time can range from 10 minutes to 120 minutes and longer. Each body area will require multiple treatments with intervals between treatments ranging from four weeks to 10 weeks. A minimum of six treatments are required.
